"Spread The Word, To End The Word" is a national campaign that is kicking off right here in Siouxland.
Students from West Middle School are urging people to make a pledge to stop the use of the 'R" word towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
They took turns voicing out their concerns and signing their names on a banner to make their pledge.
The nationwide campaign was founded by college students from Notre Dame and Yale back in 2009, and it has been taking off ever since.
8th grader, Sadie Boettcher, says the use of the "R" word is just offensive and should be stopped.
"It just seems that, that word separates them from us because they're really no different than us. They're the same people as us but that word, when they get called that, that makes them feel different and no one should feel that way," she said.
Students put up some drawings and signs of the campaign all around the school in hopes to get others more aware and to make a pledge.
