An Altoona man who lied about his service in the Army to obtain medical benefits has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison.

Authorities say 53 year old Jeffrey Kepler gave the Veterans Affairs medical center a falsified discharge form in 2007.

The form said that Kepler had served in the Army between 1977 and 1979, but he was actually only in the Army for 27 days in 1986.

He was discharged for not meeting medical fitness standards.

Prosecutors say Kepler received more than $100,000 in health benefits as a result of his deception.
