Vermillion, SD is reeling on Saturday after hearing that 16-year old Madison Wallace drowned after attempting to save her 6-year old brother Garrett at a Sioux Falls park on Friday. Her brother Garrett survived.
A passerby Lyle Eagletail also died from the incident.
Madison and her family moved to Vermillion, South Dakota from Utah a few years ago. Folks there can't believe such a young girl would so selflessly risk her own life for her brothers.
Adam Hammer, a USD Student said, "Just made my heart sink really to hear a story like this. But at the same time, just to think of the courage and the bravery it took for a 16-year old girl to jump in and save a child like that, it's just awesome to hear."
Braley Dodson, who attends Madison's LDS Church said, "When I heard this story, I thought it was such a great and selfless act that she jumped in to save her brother. And also with Lyle, how he just jumped in, sounded like a really selfless thing."
Madison's family and friends have set up a memorial Facebook Page and website for her.
