Iowa Students May Countdown Hours Rather Than Days To Summer

Pretty soon students in the state of Iowa may be counting down the hours until school lets out rather than crossing out the days on the calendar. Right now in Iowa, schools must be in session for at least 180 days. But lawmakers are looking into changing that to 1080 hours instead.

The Iowa House of Representatives has already passed the bill with an overwhelming majority bringing it closer to becoming law. If it were to pass, Sioux City already exceeds the 1080 hour threshold by several hundred hours.

With this in mind, the Sioux City Schools Superintendent, Dr. Paul Gausman, expects few changes from the passing of the bill. He says, "Of course you want to take a look at the fine print in any legislation like this and make sure they're not taking a look at defining the instructional hour in some different way. And so we'll keep our eye on that very closely. But other than that this really will make no difference."

Dr. Gausman says smaller school districts are likely to benefit the most from the passage of this bill. The legislation will give districts greater flexibility in terms of scheduling and perhaps introduce four day school weeks for some. That move would help the smaller districts to save money on transportation and upkeep costs.
