Folks in Estherville, IA are remembering a fallen soldier. Flags usually reserved for holidays, have been hung all across downtown Estherville to honor the town's fallen soldier, 27-year old Staff Sgt. Steven P. Blass who was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on March 11th.

The people of his town are in shock over losing their local hero.

"You hear about somebody being from a small town. You hear something that tragic, he's overseas fighting for our country, you never want to hear about something like that," said James Hatland, of Estherville, IA.

"It's hard, I've done it, it's really hard. But we're proud," said Donna Day-Templin, of Estherville, IA.

Staff Sgt. Blass leaves behind a wife and a young son.

The cause of the crash that also killed 4 other American soldiers is still being investigated.
