In 2007, Rick Singer of Le Mars was deployed to Iraq for just under a year, and within that time he said his experience had a life-long impact.

Singer had been apart of the Iowa National Guard for over 10 years before he was deployed.

While gone, he left behind a wife and 2 kids, one of the hardest things he said he had to do.

But it was when he got back that Singer said his perspective on life changed, never taking some of the smallest things for granted.

"We as a society tend to complain about the littlest things 'like I don't have the Iphone 5. Well just be happy you have a cell service'. Just the little things you take for granted that guys still serving are having to fight through everyday," said Singer.

Singer is retired from the National Guard now and is a deputy sheriff for Plymouth County.

He said his perspective on people and the way he approaches others has changed as well.

Singer mentioned that his son is also following in his footsteps and joined the military two years ago.
