Think about this: You're driving down the road when suddenly, you're in an accident or your car unexpectedly leaves the roadway and you're in a ditch. The first thing you want to do is call for help. But where's your cell phone?
"Probably my pocket."
"My purse."
"In a holder on my dash."
"Just lying on the seat beside me."
If you're one of those people who leaves their cell phone in a cup holder or passenger seat, odds are, it won't be in the same spot after getting into an accident. So then what?
"I don't know. I guess I never really thought about that. Good question," said Dale Gapp of Elk Point, SD.
That's why it's vital to keep your cell phone in a secure place; like a glove compartment or a coat pocket.
"We do recommend that people do have their cell phones with them, have it close to your body," said John Farley, Iowa State Trooper.
Another good tip to remember, when you're driving. Know your location. Take note of land marks, street signs or mile markers so in case you are in an emergency you can tell responders where you are.
"That's why people wanted them, Oh I can contact somebody in case of an emergency. Now its evolved into just a piece of equipment that we sort of take for granted. We have to remember, we do have that life-saving capabilities with cell phones," said Farley.
