Sioux City, IA - Morningside swept defending champion Northwestern 2-1 in eight innings and 9-1 in six innings in its GPAC softball opener on Thursday at the Jensen Softball Complex.
The Mustangs, who climbed to 11-8 on the season, won the opener when Mackenzie Neely slugged a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie that had stood since the second inning.
Morningside collected eight hits off Northwestern pitcher Katie VandeVoort, who struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
The Mustangs' Emma Remy scattered six hits, struck out five, and also didn't walk a batter to raise her record to 5-2.
Johnson had two doubles and Daas had a pair of singles to pace the Mustangs' offensive attack. The Mustangs' other hits were a double by Brockamp and singles by Hendrix, Steffen, and Feldt.
The Mustangs will travel to Fremont, Neb., on Sunday for a GPAC doubleheader against Midland.
