Laurel, NE - Laurel, Nebraska still calls pro golfer Mark Calcavecchia one of their own. Calcavecchia was born in Laurel, and spend the first 13 years of his life in the small Nebraska town until his parents moved to Florida.
"That's where I learned how to play golf. There's a lot of great memories going back to there and I think of my 13 years in Laurel a lot actually" Calcavecchia says.
Verneal Gade still keeps in touch with Calcavecchia. The Laurel native says he remembers Mark playing golf barefoot because he'd go swimming and come back and play golf. Gade and many others from Laurel will make the trip to Omaha this week to watch Calcavecchia compete in the U.S. Open.
During his practice round Calcavecchia ran into his share of folks from northeast Nebraska. "A lot of people have said hi and rooted me on. I've met a lot of people from Laurel, Wayne, and Randolph and the neighboring cities around Laurel. Some people actually remember. It's been a lot of fun" said Calcavecchia.
