Ft. Dodge, IA--The No. 1 Akron-Westfield Westerners survived seven errors to defeat No. 10 New London 5-4 in the Iowa Class 1A State Softball Championship.
The New London Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to five Westerner errors. A-W, however, was able to chip away at the deficit.
In the fifth inning, Haley Coyle led off with a single and scored the first run of the game for A-W on an error.
In the sixth, the A-W bats exploded for three runs to tie the game. Pinch runner Danika Tindall came around to score on a Coyle single. Jordan Hansen followed with a double to left field, driving in Jessica Hansen. The next batter, Sarah Schroeder singled and Jordan Hansen scored the tying run on an error by the Tiger catcher.
Jacyln Smith led off the seventh for A-W with a single and advanced to second on a fielders choice. With one out, Bailey Davis singled and Smith was able to score from second to give the Westerners a 5-4 lead.
New London was able to make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers had runners on second and third with two outs, but Kayla Tindall was able to get the strikeout to end the inning, the game, and the season.
A-W improves to 37-2 on the year, while New London ends the year at 32-10.
Tindall pitched all seven innings for the win, giving up three hits, no earned runs, and striking out six.
The A-W offense pounded out 10 hits, highlighted by two each by Davis, Coyle, Hansen, and Katie Johnson.
The championship is the fifth in the last nine years for the Westerners and coach Todd Colt and the third in four seasons.
