Sioux City—Arguably, Sioux City Bishop Heelan's football tradition stacks up with anybody's in the state of Iowa. Head Coach Roger Jansen has won 82 percent of his games in fourteen years on the sideline, and has qualified for the playoffs every year except one.
The Bishop Heelan Crusaders are the preseason number one team in the state in Class 3-A, and they intend to keep it that way.
Heelan only returns five starters on each side of the ball from last year's state runners-up, but lucky for them, two of them are Connor Niles and Trent Solsma.
Niles had over 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns receiving. While Solsma threw for over 3,000 yards and 39 touchdowns.
With the talent at Heelan, Jansen understands the importance of tradition.
"We just tell the kids that they've got to work hard and buy in, and you've got to be committed" he said. "That's truly the bottom line. It's an honor and a privilege to put on a Heelan football uniform."
The Crusaders open their 2013 season on August 30 against Sioux City East.
