SIOUX CITY, Iowa—The top-ranked Morningside Mustangs began their quest for a return trip to the NAIA National Championship Game with a resounding 56-28 victory over Valley City State.
Joining the Mustangs in their journey is a familiar Siouxland face: Brandon Wegher. The former Heelan standout and Iowa Hawkeye ran 25 times for 158 yards and two scores in the victory.
Quarterback Ryan Kasdorf started the scoring when he found Joel McCabe for a touchdown pass in the first quarter. The Vikings answered however when Derek Elliott scrambled down the sideline to tie it up at 7.
Late in the second quarter, Wegher scored his first touchdown, going up and over on the goal line and giving the Mustangs a 28-14 lead.
The Vikings responded, however, with Kurtis Walls connection with Cedric Chappell on a screen pass for a touchdown.
The Mustangs led 28-20 at half before pulling away after the break. Morningside is home next Saturday against Nebraska Wesleyan at 7 PM.
